Case Study

Commercial Solar PV Installation in Dundee

89.76kWp rooftop solar panel system for a Dundee dairy business

Commercial solar panels for businesses in Scotland

Central Sparks supported the delivery of a commercial rooftop solar PV system for a dairy company based in Dundee, Scotland.

The business wanted to reduce operational energy costs, improve sustainability and generate more of its own electricity on-site. With energy representing a significant overhead, solar PV offered a practical way to reduce reliance on grid electricity while supporting the company’s wider environmental goals.

The completed system included 204 x 440W JA Solar panels, a Solis inverter and export manager, and a total system size of 89.76kWp. The project was commissioned in May 2025 and completed over a two-week project duration.

Project overview

The challenge

Reducing energy costs while supporting long-term sustainability

The client was already taking steps to reduce its environmental impact, including transitioning its delivery fleet to electric vehicles. The next logical step was to assess whether rooftop solar panels could help offset daytime electricity consumption.

As a dairy business, the client had ongoing operational energy demands. Reducing electricity costs without disrupting production was a key priority.

The project needed to:

The target was to achieve a commercial return within a 5 to 6-year period while ensuring the installation could be completed safely and efficiently.

The system was designed to support the client’s daytime electricity demand while meeting grid export requirements.

Project highlights

Key performance figures

This commercial solar PV installation was projected to deliver:

These figures gave the client a clear commercial case for investing in solar PV, with the system designed to generate long-term savings and reduce carbon emissions.

The solution

A fully assessed rooftop solar PV system

Before installation, a full feasibility assessment was completed to understand the technical and commercial viability of the project.

This included:

Following this assessment, an 89.76kWp rooftop solar PV system was designed using high-efficiency monocrystalline panels and Solis string inverter technology.

The solar array was laid out across both south-facing and north-facing roof sections to make effective use of the available roof space.

Because of local grid restrictions, the system also required export limitation. This was handled through a G100-compliant export control system, limiting export in line with the requirements identified through SSEN’s feasibility study.

Overcoming project challenges

Weather delays

As with many solar projects in Scotland, weather conditions affected some installation days. This was managed by adjusting crew allocation and planning the project around suitable working windows.

Grid restrictions

The local DNO requirements meant the system needed export limitation. This was addressed through a compliant export control system, allowing the project to move forward while staying within the required grid parameters.

Operational continuity

The installation was planned in phases to avoid disruption to the client’s production operations. The site did not require a shutdown, allowing the business to continue operating while the project was delivered.

The outcome

A commercial solar PV system delivered on time and within budget

The Dundee solar PV system was successfully commissioned on time and within budget.

The client now has a rooftop solar system designed to generate renewable electricity on-site, reduce grid reliance and support the company’s long-term sustainability goals.

By investing in commercial solar, the business has taken another practical step toward reducing operating costs and lowering its environmental impact.
